So I have seen those cute little helicopters that can fit in your hand before and it was fun to play with if it fell and crashed it still worked and everything.

So I was curious I am not looking at going full blast hobby with this and getting into anything really serious. I just want something I can have fun with.

So is there any suggestions on a at least semi controllable copter that I won't destroy because I haven't had experience.

Blade MCX is the only choice. It's kind of expensive ($129) for a palm sized heli, but it's quite durable and repair parts are readily available. Any LHS sells them. You can learn to fly in 1/2 hour and be very proficient in just a few more. THey are lots of fun for a beginner or somebody just looking to fool around a little. I used to fly mine over the ceiling fan and try to land on the blades.

Do not buy the 2 and 3 channel toys you see for $20 - $70. They are just that, toys. They break easy, are not repairable and are not easy to control or remedy if they don't respond correctly. Any heli needs 4 channels.

So in response to balr then.
I was looking around and the Lama v3s and v4s looked pretty good as far as reviews go. but again learning curve? Would I be able to learn with one of those and not have to buy 5 more rudders and props just for the first little flights.

Those helicopters are a bit bigger, so it depends on how much space you have. I tried to learn with a Blade CX2 in my house, and I crashed into furniture a lot. The Blade mCX is usually undamaged in a crash, and since it is slower than the bigger ones, it doesn't get out of control and run into the coffee table :)

The thing is the Blade MCX weighs about an ounce, so it has no inertia or mass. It changes directions immediately and doesn't weigh enough to hurt anything if you crash. The E-sky Lamas are a good deal larger and heavier. They don't respond all that well and they do break when you crash them, especially the V3. You will need to upgrades and repairs, it's part of the learning process.

MCX is a very good choice. Like, you can follow it around the house. It fits through doorways with lots of clearance. A Lama has less than half that clearance, and the handling isn't innately tight enough to keep from hitting stuff.

A Lama will stay challenging longer, making you a tighter pilot. Depends kinda what you want to get out of the experience.

None of these 'easy' helis prepares you for CP/swash tail craft, except in terms of orientation, which IS important, but a $40 RC car can get you oriented and doesn't bust when it hits things. Motor-tail craft, I wouldn't bother going there, the intertial lag in the tail motor makes them very squirrely.
