Hi everyone, I got a motor from hobbycity last year and it didnt spin up and I wasn't gonna send it back because it would cost just as much as the motor to do so for a replacement, so I think I am going to try and rewind it. However I cant get the bell off the shaft because I can't seem to locate a allen wrench small enough to get the grub/set screw out. I went to the hardware store and got the smallest one they had, the craftsman .050, 1/16 in ball end hex hey set, and its still smaller... my hobby shop doesn't carry any micro stuff. :( any suggestions?
Also this will be my first rewind on a brushless motor, I have not done much research yet on the forum but I will be, but if there is any suggestions that people have no that would be helpful.
Here is the motor I have.

Here are some pics of the motor and its what appears to be a terrible job on the winding.

No. You don't need to take out that grub screw. Just take the clip out in the back, and you're in business.
I just did a rewind of that same exact motor yesterday, I'll find the thread and post it for you in a bit

Thanks. I will check it when I get back tonight... going to the big city with the wife!

As yangster says - you don't have the separate the bell from the shaft... but...it is probably 1.27mm = ~0.05"... but you say 0.05 is too big. The only other "standard" size I've come across is 0.9mm = 0.035"... my tiny WesTeknik has that.

Yea. that grub screw is very tiny. but you only need it out if changing out the shaft.
anyhow, i thought i posted something, but maybe not.
Anyhow, I rewound my delta w/newbie wire 26gauge with i think 9turns (can't remember) since I got that wind working,...i started playing with 2 other motors and rewinded a more than a few times on 1 motor.
kv is slightly higher than stock and definitely seems like more punch...
on 7x3.5 on 3S it's pulling about 9amps and really fast. Planning on putting it on a wing or something fast.

Do a search in this thread for 16g and you will get lots of information. Here is one thread on rewinding it what you might expect.

can you post wihich one. I'd buy it just to get the allen wrench :)
I had to do that just to get the allen wrench on a 1mm for the other motors.

Hey Bennett
The "newbie wire" that comes in that GBv $9.99 kit will be PLENTY for winding both of your motors, including a few goofs. Read the posts that Ron linked you to and possibly print them for reference. Thats what I did, it's nice to have a hard copy.
Enjoy!

Well, I bought a set (3 spools of the red, green, and gold color) 90 feet each @ $10 and I've rewound 3 motors and on the 3rd motor, I've rewound 3 times and I still have wire left over to do probably another 2 motor. So you'll have plenty.

I stopped by a place called "fastenal", they sell screws and tools. the guy there put a MIC on my wrench and it showed .034 inches. they can order a .035 inch wrench. So, you now know what to look for. Good luck.

Here are some pictures of the Stator of the Gobrushless kit. I decided to just complete the kit, than move on to the 16gram hobby city motor next. I think my winds came out well for the first time. I did 17turns on it, just kind of picked the number out of my head and went with it. we will see how it does!

Yes-that's insulation. I scrape with an exacto. One of the issues with the copper colored wire is seeing the removal (or nicks) well. You have to do that with the motor wires also. Solder the 3 together and insulate. You just need enough stub to get some shrink wrap on.
Ron uses a real, uncoated aspirin, and pinches the wire between the aspirin and soldering iron. Guess it gives off an acid and dissolves the insulation. Bad fumes. My one try went poorly so I didn't try again.
Nice first winding. 17T of 26g is what I got for 2 layers on that stator. I tried 3 layers but it rubs the front of the can on the GBv. It's fine on the GBx.

'scraping' can be tedious. be Careful.
take your time, make a 'project' out of it if necesary, i do,,
i clamp some lexan ('plexiglass) to (overhanging) my workbench and
then brace the whole assembly over, under, and around this for
protection and support.
...usually done by the time ive finished humming 'dirty deeds' tho :D
lookin good so far! :)

Well, in the process of scraping the wire I ended up some how pulling majority of the copper colored wire that would connect to my esc totally off. I probably broke the wire at some point and it just finally gave. I rewound the gold wire and so far it looks like everything has held just fine I wasn't as rough on it this time. when I had the wire off I took the chance to check what I could on the other wires for cracks or splits in the wire and I didn't see anything visible.
I ran out of heat shrink so I need to hit up the wally world today and get some so I can finish this project. :)

use sandpaper...much easier to use

The easiest way to get the insulation off the wire is to torch it then use sand paper. I use a wet wadded up paper towel to keep the heat from traveling too far down the wire. I leave about 1/2 inch hanging out beyond the paper towel and use a hobby torch on the wire and the insulation almost immediately begins to change color and break down. Then I just hit it with sand paper and the insulation falls right off effortlessly.

I torched the wire and sanded and it was much easier than trying to scrap the wire. thanks for the great tip! I completed the Brushless motor kit from Gobrushless and here are some pics of my final product... I didn't get to test it out yet because I was short one male JST connector that I will have to pick up for my new ESC.
What ESC are others using with the Gobrushless Kit? I got an 18amp that I will be using. I also have a 10amp laying around too that I will be using with the Hextronix 16g once a rewind it.
the last three pics are really just me messing with the camera, just a little different focusing.

17t (26?)awg
im guessing in the 26. gram range, maybe a tad more for the 3.5 bullets..?
is that a 'stock' GBv kit then?
they now come with long tube, powder-coated stator, and upgraded bearings!? Nice!
very tidy work there Bennet,
look forward to hearing good results :)

Nice work.
Don't use that 7x5 prop unless ONLY on 2S. Too much on 3S I'm pretty sure.
This is an < 10A motor.
I start my testing with a lame old NiMh to start. Less probability of frying something.
Did you check for shorts?

Neat looking winding there bennet. It's basically the same motor as a Lensrc 17turn from several years ago. It would put out a bit over 10oz on either a gws 8040 on a 2s and a gsw 7035 prop on 3s ( both dd props), and both drawing less than 6 amps
Are you sure that's#26 wire? I've wound some of those stators and 16turns of #25 filles the slots up a lot more

Thanks all for your comments.. I dont plan on running 3S as I only have 2S batteries. Also I checked for shorts nothing.... And yes this is the stock GBv kit. the 9.99 one, and its all assembled already! just gotta do the winding! :)
this evening I have been busy at work rewinding the motor that this thread was all about the 16gram hextronix motor. I was reading a few other threads and some were getting crazy like 35turns on it... Its hard to believe because I got 18 and I was maxed out, I tried 21 and 20 but it rubbed on the bell housing each time, so I am stuck with 18T I guess with the 26g newbie wire. here are some photos. Its not as pretty as the GB kit, but I think it will do the job. :)

Benett,
does your 16gram clog on startup...
mine clogs a lot on 2S...on 3S it starts up smoothly...
I've since switch mine out to 3S, but I have to watch throttle...only WOT some times.

That was the original problem with this motor that I couldn't get it to start up correctly. I would just shutter than totally stop. Once I get some more bullets and my esc outfitted with another male JST I will be doing testing on both the 16gram hex motor and the GB kit motor.

well, mine would clog and clog, but once started, it would run well...I just can't stop the throttle in mid air...otherwise i'm coming in dead stick.
I've rewinded mine, but the problem is still there....some say to use soft start...but my esc is the super simple and no option for that...
anyways, like I said, on 3S,...startup is smooth and runs fine...

well, the rewind on the hextronix was a failure... just makes some awful sounds when trying to start up and than stops.. I checked for shorts and found none... Its doing the same thing as it did before I rewound it.... junk I guess.
However, the gobrushless kit works flawlessly.
The motor comes in at 26.2grams I will more stats on it probably friday on my day off.

Is that the NEW GBv? Mine lookes straight out of a DVD ROM drive (I know I yanked one for my first try) ;) Don't be fooled though, Gram for gram it is my best performer! The dull metal can has 3 tiny holes but It is like an old Chevy with only the rusting primer coat but a shiny new V8 under the hood.
If thats the $10.00 GBv, then I have to order one TONIGHT!

Well I think I finally found out the problem with the 16gram hex motor.. After I rewound it AGAIN... A 12 Turn this time.. I got the motor to spin... but it was really wacky and I could see the stator kind of jump a bit, I unwrapped it and found a crack on one of the teeth... the stator was expanding and hitting the magnets on the bell. So I guess the thing is junk. lol
